Chapter 24: Mrs. Aldridge
We were married again on a Tuesday, at the Cook County courthouse, because I wanted it done where it had gone wrong.
It was the same building, the same marble hall and the same clerk's window with the same chipped brass nameplate.
Dalton stood on the courthouse steps in the charcoal suit with a paper cup of coffee in his hand.
He looked at the spot where he had read a laboratory report in the back of a car, three years ago to the week.
"Here?" I asked.
"Right there. On the second step."
"Do you want to move?"
"No." He set the coffee on the rail. "I want to walk in from here."
My mother arrived in a lilac jacket and a hat, and she looked us over carefully.
"Tuck in his tie," she said.
I tucked in his tie.
Ruby came behind her in a yellow dress, with her curls free for once, carrying a bouquet of grocery store daisies.
Archie marched at her side in a miniature charcoal suit, holding the black ring box straight out in front of him in both hands.
"Is it time?" he said.
"Almost, buddy," said Dalton.
"Can Biscuit come?"
"He's got the bow tie."
Biscuit trotted up the steps in the black bow tie with a daisy tucked under his collar and sat down beside the doors.
Archie had stayed with his aunt for most of the autumn.
Belinda's lawyer had called Dalton twice, and Dalton had answered both times with the same sentence, which was that the boy could have a good life no matter whose son he was.
I never learned what the chair did with his silver hair and his dinosaurs.
I knew the board had removed him and that his name had come off the lobby wall.
