He Sent Me Overseas to Marry Her, I'm Staying Overseas to Never See Him Again novel · Chapter 8 of 32

Chapter 8: Thirty Days

The doors swung shut behind her.

Nobody in the arch said anything.

Then the old cutter picked up his knife again, and one by one the mallets started.

They went back to work.

I went into the glass office and found the lease in the bottom drawer.

Madison was right.

Garland's lease on the arch ended on October 31, and nobody had renewed it.

The landlord was a railway property company that owned four hundred arches along the viaduct.

I called them at two.

By four I had their letting agent on the phone, a bored man who kept eating something crunchy.

"The unit's being marketed from November," he said. "There's interest. A gin bar."

"I'll take it from November first."

"Under Garland?"

"Under me. Laura Kendrick."

"You'd need twelve months up front, plus a deposit. Overseas tenant, no UK credit."

He named the figure.

It was almost exactly everything I had.

Seven years of salary I'd never had time to spend, because I'd spent the seven years at my desk.

"Send me the contract," I said.

I signed it on Tuesday night on the old laptop.

Then I opened my bank and moved the money across.

I didn't hear Oliver come in.

He was standing behind my chair with two mugs of tea, and he was looking at the screen.

£42,000.

Remaining balance: £311.18.

He set the mugs down very carefully.

"What are you doing?"

"Keeping the lights on."

"That's your money."

"Yes."

"That's all your money."

"There's three hundred and eleven pounds left. I'm not destitute. I can buy a lot of chips."

"Laura." He crouched beside the chair so his face was level with mine. "If this goes wrong, you've got nothing. You're in a foreign country with nothing."
