Chapter 18: The Green Dress
The ballroom of the Hotel Dayton had two hundred chairs, a stage, and a banner that read LOWRY FREIGHT: THE NEXT ROAD.
I came in at eight, on Emmett's arm, in the green silk dress.
It fit me exactly, and I hated that a little.
The zipper was cold along my spine, and the skirt moved when I walked.
The woman at the door took one look at me and forgot to ask for my name.
Gavin stood on the stage with a microphone and a fresh bruise along his jaw, under makeup.
"...and I want to thank the whole Lowry family of employees," he was saying, "for the loyalty you've shown through a difficult season."
He stopped.
He had seen the green.
Two hundred heads turned to follow his eyes, one row after another.
The room went quiet from the front to the back.
"Well," Gavin said into the silence, and his smile came back a half second late. "Everyone, my wife. Tilda has been through a very hard time. Let's give her some room."
Nobody clapped.
I walked down the center aisle with Emmett one step behind my shoulder.
I passed the retired judge, the banker and my father's old friend at the front table.
All three stood up as I went by.
I climbed the stage steps.
"Tilda," Gavin said, very gently, and held the microphone against his chest. "You're tired, sweetheart. Odette will take you home."
Odette stood at the foot of the stage with her arms folded.
She looked at me, and she didn't move.
I took the microphone out of my husband's hand.
