Chapter 7: The Apology Video
Piper's video went up at seven on Wednesday morning, and by eight the whole ridge had sent it to me.
I watched it at Gran's kitchen table with a cup of coffee going cold.
She had filmed it on her porch, in a cream sweater, with no makeup and Waffles lying across her feet.
"Hi, everyone." Her voice caught on the second word. "I wasn't going to say anything. I've never done this before."
She wiped her eye with a knuckle.
"I'm heartbroken about Mrs. Teague. I'm heartbroken for Hannah. I never asked for a helicopter. I told someone I was scared, and I'll carry that for the rest of my life."
The camera moved in on her.
"What I'm asking is for people to be gentle. Grief makes people lash out at whoever is easiest to reach. I've received a lot of messages this week that I won't repeat, and I've had to take my page private for my safety."
She bent and put her cheek against the dog's gold head.
"He's fourteen. He doesn't understand any of this."
The video ended on a soft piano note.
I looked at the number under it.
Three hundred thousand views at eight o'clock, and a million by ten.
The first comment was: "Leave this woman and her dog alone."
The second was: "Grief is not a license to bully."
The third was: "She's being dramatic."
I read that last one for a while.
It was the same word Dalton had texted me.
"Don't read the comments."
Jonah stood in the back doorway with a dish towel pressed around his left hand.
