Chapter 8: Red Flag

By dusk, every household on Larch Ridge Road was crowded into Gran's kitchen.

Twenty-three people, and every chair she owned, and the old piano bench from the parlor.

The man with the pie stood at the head of the table with the Redwing letter in his hand.

"Eleven of these," he said. "One per mailbox. I want a show of hands. Who's paid them this year?"

Eleven hands went up.

"Nineteen hundred dollars each. And they've just told us we're not on the map."

"Then we don't owe them a cent," said the stand woman.

"They won't refund us," a young father said from the doorway. "It's in the contract."

"Then they can explain the contract to the supervisors. Thirty days, and the whole county will be reading it."

Somebody laughed.

Somebody else slid a sheet of paper down the table, and it was a cancellation form.

I wrote my name at the bottom of the first one.

Hannah Teague.

Beside me, Jonah sat with his bandaged hand under the table, saying nothing, until the old man looked at him.

"Son. You flew for them. What do we do if the wind comes?"

Jonah took a long moment.

"Dot's pond holds eighty thousand gallons," he said. "Her irrigation lines run the whole length of the north rows. Pump's old, but it works. We wet the line before the wind gets here. And somebody has to disk a firebreak with the tractor tonight."

"I can do the tractor," the young father said.

"I'll show you where." Jonah stood.

Twenty-three people stood up with him and followed him out to the barn.
