Chapter 20: The Vote
The boardroom at Gibbes Home had been furnished overnight, and Calvin Gibbes stopped in the doorway at five to nine with his mouth open.
"What is this?" Calvin said.
"The meeting room," Ward said.
"Where is the table?"
"That is the table."
It was a long walnut table with a coffee ring at one end.
Around it stood eight Bonneau chairs in white oak and ash, each worn smooth in the seat.
A pale bench ran along the window.
A reading chair with a cantilevered back sat in the corner, and at the head of the table stood a rocker.
The room smelled of beeswax and cedar and the faint sweetness of glue.
Twelve board members had filed in behind Calvin and stopped dead.
Rett stood by the window with Dell, in his grandfather's suit, and tried not to look at anyone.
A dozen reporters crowded the back, holding recorders.
The Pallas man stood stiffly beside a trolley of particleboard samples under a cloth.
"This is theft," Calvin said. "These are company assets."
"They are licensed prototypes," Ward said, "in the custody of the CEO, as the contract provides."
He did not raise his voice.
"I signed for them two years ago. I have been taking care of them."
"You took them to your house!" Calvin said.
"I did," Ward said.
A reporter in the back began to write very fast.
An older woman on the board crossed to the nearest chair and laid her hand on the top rail.
She was silver-haired and wore a blue wool suit.
She looked down at it.
"May I?" she said.
"Please," Rett said.
She sat.
Everyone watched her settle, and sit back, and her shoulders came down for the first time that morning.
