Chapter 22: Switch
The sun porch on Legare Street had six tall windows, and Ward had opened every one of them.
"Neighbors," Rett said.
"The nearest is forty feet away," Ward said. "And she's deaf."
"How do you know she's deaf?"
"I've shouted at her about her recycling."
Rett laughed, and the laugh went out through the windows into the warm night and the smell of jasmine and wet brick.
He stood in the middle of the room in nothing but his boxers, with the bench against the glass behind him.
It was the bench he had built in the spring two years ago.
It had a long pale seat, a curved back, and a cushion of faded blue.
It held the shape of a man's body.
It held the shape of Ward's.
"This is where you sat," Rett said.
"Every night."
"Show me."
Ward looked at him for a moment.
Then he crossed the floor and sat on the end of it, naked, with his back against the corner.
He spread his legs and gave Rett a look that scorched.
"Like this," he said. "I'd sit here, and play the messages."
"And what did you do?"
"I listened," Ward said.
"That's all?"
"At first," Ward said.
Rett's heart began to thud.
He walked slowly across the boards and stopped between Ward's knees.
"And after the first?" he said.
"I thought about your voice," Ward said.
"What about it?"
"What it would sound like if you said my name," Ward said.
"Is that all?"
"What it would sound like," Ward said, hoarse, "if you said it while I touched you."
Rett's boxers hit the floor.
He knelt on the bench astride Ward's lap, with his knees sinking into the cushion.
He took Ward's face in his hands.
"Tell me," he said. "Every night. What did you do?"
