Chapter 8: The Long Night
Rett's bedroom door hit the wall, and neither of them noticed.
Ward had him by the hips and was walking him backward across the floor.
He kissed him as if he had been starved for a week.
The ride home from King Street had been twelve minutes of silence in the back of a black car.
Ward's hand had been clamped on his knee the whole way.
Now Ward pushed the suit jacket off his shoulders and let it fall.
"Slowly," Rett said into his mouth.
"No," Ward said.
"I mean it. Slowly. You rushed the closet."
"You told me to," Ward said.
"I was showing off."
Ward drew back and looked at him.
His hair was mussed, his dinner jacket was gone, and his white shirt was open to the middle of his chest.
There was a bruise on the left side of his neck the shape of Rett's mouth.
"Then show me slowly," Ward said.
Rett's throat tightened.
He took Ward by the open collar and walked him back until his knees hit the mattress.
"Sit."
Ward sat on the quilt, big and dark against the white.
Rett stood between his knees and undid the rest of the buttons, one at a time, and slid the shirt off.
He took his time over the chest.
It was broad and hard, dusted with dark hair.
Low on the ribs was a scar that Rett had not seen in the dark.
He put his mouth on it.
"Appendix," Ward said, in a thick voice. "I was nineteen."
"I wasn't asking."
"You were about to," Ward said.
"I was about to lick it."
Ward laughed, low, and his hands closed on Rett's waist.
Rett pushed him onto his back.
He stripped slowly, shirt and belt and trousers, with Ward watching every inch, and Ward's gaze was a heat on his skin.
"You're staring," Rett said.
