Chapter 17: The Pen

Genevieve's POV

On Saturday evening the lab was empty except for me and a stack of data I wasn't reading.

Alasdair had been quiet for three days.

He brought coffee, and he put reports on my desk.

Twice I looked up and found him in the doorway with his mouth open on a sentence.

Twice he said, "Never mind."

I let him keep it, and I thought about his hands on my waist more often than I wanted to.

The buzzer rang at seven.

On the monitor, Colin stood on the sidewalk in a rumpled gray suit, with no driver and no briefcase.

I buzzed him up and met him at the top of the stairs.

He looked thinner than he had in court. His tie was knotted wrong, a loop too short.

"Gen."

"Colin. You can have my office. I have fifteen minutes."

He sat in the visitor's chair, where the students sat when their numbers failed.

He put both hands on his knees.

"I have something to ask you, and I want you to let me finish."

"Go on."

"The directors are leaving."

He said it to the desk.

"Three have resigned since Thursday. The buyer is gone. The bank has called Mother twice, and she has stopped answering. The company needs a face, and the only face it ever had was ours."

"Ours."

"The family's. Mine and yours."

He looked up.

"If you married me again, quietly, the board would settle. The stock would be one household. Mother would drop everything."
