Chapter 10: Hello, Dead Girl
I hit pause.
Aurelio's young face froze on the screen, gray and shaking, looking right at me.
"That's his father," Paloma whispered. "Mari. That's Rocco's father."
"I know."
"You were sitting right there."
"I know."
"He locked the door on a nine-year-old."
I pressed play.
I made myself watch the rest.
I don't remember all of it.
Somewhere in the middle, Paloma found my hand and did not let go.
I remember Aurelio Ricci at the door, looking at his watch.
When it was over, Paloma turned off the TV, and we sat in the dark.
Neither of us slept.
At seven in the morning her phone rang.
It was the line cook.
She listened, and her face changed, and she put him on speaker.
"Somebody dumped a guy in front of the restaurant," the line cook said. "Like an hour ago. A big bald guy. They beat him bad. The ambulance took him to Methodist."
My whole body went cold.
"Was he alive?" I said.
