Chapter 6: Lucía Vidal

I read Paloma's post until the words stopped meaning anything.

Your papa kept a tin.

A blue one.

Carmine had asked me that across my own counter.

Now he was going to tear up the floor under it on the morning of his daughter's wedding.

He didn't know where it was.

He only knew it had to be somewhere in that room.

I didn't sleep that night either.

In the morning I went looking for work, because I had to do something with my hands or lose my mind.

Tasca do Largo was a tiny place at the bottom of a staircase street.

Six tables and a counter.

An old woman named Dona Fátima ran it with her grandson.

I told her my name was Lucía Vidal and I could cook anything.

She handed me a knife and a sack of onions and watched me for two minutes.

"Tomorrow at six," she said.

For two weeks I peeled, and fried, and grilled sardines over charcoal until my arms smelled like smoke.

Nobody there knew my face.

Nobody there knew Rocco Ricci.

At night I sat on my bed with a bottle of vinho verde and watched the news from New York on my phone.

The merger was signed.

There was a picture of Aurelio and Carmine shaking hands on the steps of a bank.

Carmine's wolf ring was right there, catching the flash.
