Chapter 15: Rule Two, Alpha

I drove through the Ironwood gate at ten that night, and nobody stopped me.

The guards at the gatehouse looked at my face and waved me through.

Alasdair's house stood dark on the hill, except for one lit window at the back.

I parked in the drive and walked around the side, past the garage where Imogen's car was not.

The kitchen door was unlocked.

He was sitting at the long table with a black notebook open in front of him.

He looked up, and his eyes went from grey to amber in one breath.

"Odette," he said.

"Dorian cooked me dinner," I said. "He told me what the smell between us is."

Alasdair stood so fast that the chair scraped.

"I was going to tell you in the morning," he said. "I wanted to do it right."

"I wanted daylight, and your grandmother in the room, and nothing in my hands."

"What would you have said?"

"That my father knew. That you're mine." He stopped. "That you're yours, and I'm only asking."

I stood in his kitchen, shaking.

I was not afraid of him.

I was afraid of how much I wanted to cross the floor.

"Don't tell me anything else tonight," I said. "Tell me tomorrow."

"Odette..."

"I've spent nine years being the one who waits."

I took off my jacket and dropped it on a chair.

"Tonight I'm done."

He took a step toward me and lifted his hand.

It stopped an inch from my face.

"Rule two," he said hoarsely.

"Rule two," I said, "says hands to yourself, Alpha."

I caught his wrist and put his palm flat against my cheek.

"So I'll have to put them where I want them."

He made a sound I felt in my knees.

Then his mouth was on mine.
