Chapter 12: Her Terms

The Langley board met me on the forty-first floor of a law firm, because none of them wanted me in their own building.

There were seven of them around a long table, and nobody was smiling.

I sat down at the far end.

Nathaniel took the chair next to mine and said nothing.

The chairman cleared his throat.

He was a gray, heavy man who had watched me sit silently through ten years of board dinners.

"Ms. Winslow," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"You said please," I said. "I wanted to see what that looked like."

A director near the window looked at his hands.

"We have a problem," the chairman said. "The Tea Rose line is shut down. The retailers have frozen our orders. Our bankers withdrew from the IPO last night."

"I read the news."

"We would like you to come back."

"As what?"

"As Chief Executive."

Nobody at the table spoke.

I looked down the table.

Ten years of them calling me Trevor's wife.

"There's a stock grant," the chairman added quickly. "Five percent, vesting immediately. We would also reinstate your name on the formulas, in internal documents."

"Internal," I said.

"We can discuss the details."

"No," I said. "We can discuss my terms."

He closed his mouth.

I took a single page out of my bag and slid it down the table.

"The Tea Rose license can be renewed. The Winslow Family Trust will license it to Langley Skin for a royalty of twelve percent of sales."
