Chapter 13: Say It to Her Face

By Monday morning, the whole campus knew I had cheated first.

I found out at the library desk, from a girl with a stack of anatomy books and a pleased little frown.

"I just think you should know what people are saying," she said.

"I'm sure you do."

"That you were with the captain since August. That Cody and Kayla only happened because you broke his heart."

She waited for my face to fall.

"Did Kayla tell you that?" I said.

"No. It's on the Northfield Confessions page."

She turned her phone around.

The post had four hundred likes.

It was anonymous, and it was written in Kayla's voice down to the little hearts.

A friend of mine got cheated on all summer by someone she trusted, and now the cheater is acting like the victim. Some people just move fast. 💔

Under it, someone had tagged the clip from the shower.

Under that, someone had written: wait, is that the roommate?? the one from the stairs??

I scanned the books and slid them back across the counter.

"Due in two weeks," I said.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

She left, slower than she came.

I stood there with both hands flat on the desk and my heart going hard.

I had planned for Kayla to be sweet to my face.

I had not planned for her to be sweet to four hundred strangers.

At noon, Nate dropped a tray onto the table in the dining hall and sat across from me.
