Chapter 10: For Show
Meridian held its celebration on the show floor at eight on Friday, with four hundred guests and a quartet.
A banner with Zhiyuan's name hung over the stage, six feet tall.
It had been Meng's idea to invite the Chairman and his husband.
"A gesture," she'd said, on the phone to Pei Jinan, in a voice like glass. "A show of unity."
Yichen understood the trap before he walked in.
Zhiyuan would stand on the little stage with a microphone and a face made for crying.
Every phone in the room would be recording.
"We can skip it," Weicheng had said in the car.
"And look afraid?"
"I don't care how it looks."
"I do," Yichen said. "Let him try."
They came in together at ten past eight, and the quartet stopped playing.
It was not on purpose.
Four hundred people simply turned their heads at once, in expensive silk, and the strings ran out of nerve.
Weicheng's hand lay at the small of Yichen's back.
It had lain there at the registry, and in the press room, and in the lift.
Tonight it felt different.
Meng came forward, smiling.
"Chairman. Mr. Lan. How good of you."
"Director," Weicheng said.
On the stage, Zhiyuan took the microphone.
He wore the camel coat again, and a thin gold pin.
His cheek had no mark on it any more, thanks to concealer.
"Friends," he said softly. "I won't keep you. I only want to say something I've been afraid to say."
The room went still.
