Chapter 7: Separate Rooms
Qiao Weicheng was awake at two in the morning, reading a message from Milan, when the door of his bedroom opened.
He did not look up at once.
He had the phone in one hand and a glass of water in the other.
The words on the screen were short.
The buyer lands Friday. Fang has booked the same hotel.
He thumbed the screen dark.
Then he looked up, and every thought he had went out of him.
Lan Yichen stood in the doorway in a black shirt that was his own, too large at the collar and long past the knee.
His bare legs were pale in the dark of the hall.
His hair was a mess, and he was holding a pencil.
"Separate rooms, Mr. Lan," Weicheng said.
His voice came out steadier than he felt.
"The bed in mine is too small to think in."
"The terms are clear."
"The terms were yours." Yichen came in and shut the door with his heel. "I wasn't going to think. I was going to draw."
"Then draw."
"I can't. I keep drawing your hands."
He dropped the pencil on the carpet as if it had burnt him.
Weicheng put the glass down on the nightstand, carefully, because his own hand was not quite his.
He had been kissed by this man against a wall of glass and had fucked him on a velvet bench.
None of it prepared him for the sight of Yichen crossing his room in the half dark with that look on his face.
It was not the look of a man who had come for the money.
It was a look he had imagined, he realized, long before he had any right to.
