Chapter 6: Dante's Table

On Saturday night I booked a table for two at Dante's Table under my sister's last name.

"It's the best restaurant in the South End," Bridget said, smoothing her good black dress. "That's what the review said. I'm still going to hate every bite."

"You don't have to hate it. You have to eat it."

"I can do both. I'm a professional."

The dining room was packed, with candles on every table and a line of people waiting by the door.

I had picked the pendant lights.

I had spent a whole weekend sanding the bar with Dante and his brother, and I had written the check for the espresso machine.

It had my initials on a plaque inside the cabinet door, where nobody ever looked.

A hostess with a tablet stood at the host stand with her back to us.

She had long dark hair pulled up and a black dress.

She turned around.

Gianna's face went through three expressions before it settled on a smile.

"Welcome to Dante's Table," she said. "Do you have a reservation?"

"Doyle, party of two."

"Of course." Her voice shook once and steadied. "Right this way."

She led us past all the candles to a table by the kitchen door.

Every head in the room turned as we passed.

A woman at the next table whispered to her husband and held up her phone.

"That's her," I heard. "That's the wedding girl."

Bridget lifted her chin and sat down very straight.
