Chapter 6: Eamon's POV: The Road

Eamon's POV

Her father told me it was the backlash, and I believed him for as long as it took to read the monitor.

The bond had snapped at the stage.

I felt it go, and the floor dropped out from under me.

My beast, which had slept at my back for three years, tore loose in the same instant.

I got my teeth together and held it down through two thousand people and four cameras.

Hazel lay on the wood in front of me with her eyes shut and her lips going blue.

"This is the plan, Alpha."

Her father stood over me with his hand on my sleeve.

"It's the drug and the bond breaking. The body shuts down. It's meant to look like this."

"She's cold."

"Yes. It's part of it."

Calvin Reese was already beside the stretcher, his face white.

"We'll get her to the car. She wakes in four hours at the safe house."

I gripped her wrist and felt nothing.

Not weak. Nothing.

"Let me ride with her."

"The press is in the hall," her father said.

"If the Alpha leaves his own ceremony, they'll know it was staged. They'll go after Lydia."

I looked at Lydia.

She was standing at the foot of the steps in her white dress, her hand on her mouth.

Her eyes were wide and wet.

"She'll be all right, Eamon." She came up and took my arm.

"You said so. You planned it all so carefully."

I had said so. I had planned all of it.

I told them to take her.

I watched the stretcher go through the side door with Calvin's hand on the rail.
