Chapter 8: The Lectern
Greta's POV
The Governor's press room held sixty chairs, and every one of them was full.
I stood at the lectern with my draft in a blue folder and my name on its cover page.
My knees would not stay still.
"Take the questions, Peaches," the Governor said, from the side wall. "I'll be watching."
Emilio stood at the very back by the door with his arms folded.
He did not look at me. That was the rule.
A man in the third row stood up before I had finished my opening.
He had a silver mustache and a belt buckle from a rodeo.
He represented the water districts, which meant he represented the people who wanted to pump the springs dry.
"Young lady," he said, smiling around the room, "the committee will want to hear from someone with a name."
A few reporters laughed.
I had heard that laugh in the third row of a hundred rooms.
"My name is on the cover page, sir," I said. "Greta Wehmeyer. Spelled the way it sounds."
"I'm sure it is, sweetheart."
"Section 3 is on page six," I said. "Read it before Thursday."
The laughing stopped.
"Section 11 is on page nineteen," I said. "It sunsets your clients' pumping permits unless the next legislature renews them."
"Your clients get a hearing every two years instead of never. That is the best deal anyone will offer them."
The man's smile went stiff.
"You're telling me what's good for my clients?"
"I'm telling you what the bill does," I said. "You can ask the Representative who read it."
Someone in the second row snorted out loud.
