Chapter 9: The Driskill
The private dining room at the Driskill had red velvet chairs and a candle in a glass.
A waiter stood by the door and did not move.
Royce Spurlock did not stand when I came in.
He was cutting a steak. His bolo tie lay flat against his shirt, and a manila folder sat beside his plate.
"Greta," he said. "Sit. Eat something. You've gotten thin."
"I'm not hungry," I said, and sat.
"Then I'll be brief."
He laid his knife down, squared it against the plate and folded his hands.
"I have three offers," Royce said. "You may take one."
I said nothing.
"First," Royce said. "You go home. Conway has been foolish, and he knows it."
"The marriage resumes, quietly, through the election in November," Royce said.
"After that you may have a separate wing of the house."
"And a job as counsel to my committee, at a hundred and forty thousand dollars."
He did not blink.
He lifted two fingers.
"Second. You sign the release my wife sent you. It is two pages, and your father's note is forgiven the moment you sign."
"Third."
He lifted the folder and tapped it on the cloth.
"Thirty days from the call, the bank posts notice on the courthouse door in Fredericksburg."
"The first Tuesday of September, the sheriff sells the Wehmeyer orchard on the steps."
"I sit on the board of that bank, Greta," he said. "I would hate to see it."
The waiter did not move.
I looked at the candle and let my heartbeat settle.
Then I looked at Royce.
"May I say something before I decide?" I said.
"By all means."
"Page twelve, line nine of the draft you filed in March had an exemption in it."
His face did not change. It was a very good face.
"It exempted the Pedernales Ridge Water Supply Corporation from the pumping cap," I said.
