Chapter 11: The Front Row
The Pabst Theater held eight hundred people, and three hundred of them were in the room for Connor.
I sat in the front row, as he had asked, in a rented tux.
The gold ceiling rose above us.
The stage was set with a long table and a huge screen.
Directly behind me, in the third row, I could feel clients looking at the back of my head.
The seat of the developer who had pulled his account was empty.
Hazel had told me to wait.
"I'll come in late," she had said at the hospital door, with her hand around my wrist. "Sit where he put you. Keep your face still. Whatever he says, do not stand up."
"What are you going to do?"
"The thing I've been waiting for since August."
She had kissed my cheek, quick and hard.
Now the house lights dropped.
Connor walked out alone, in a black tux, to applause.
He held the microphone in both hands.
"Friends, clients, colleagues." He smiled out over the rows. "Kettering Dunleavy Realty has been the proudest thing of my life."
More applause.
"It was built by two best friends from a coffee shop in Riverwest. I want to say something tonight that is hard. One of those two friends is no longer with us."
A murmur went through the crowd.
He lowered his head, and the screen behind him lit up.
It was the bridge video.
My face, stopped mid-step, with the license in my hand.
I did not move.
"Some of you have seen this," Connor said. "A man I loved walked away from a woman who cared for him. And then, as many of you know, he did something worse."
