Chapter 14: No Lies
The stagehand pulled the corridor door shut behind us, and the shouting in the theater went dull.
Hazel stood against the cinderblock wall in her red dress with her hands at her sides.
I held a bar napkin to my split lip and did not sit down.
"Say it," I said.
"It's true."
"All of it?"
"I hold seventy percent of the firm," Hazel said. "My father's trustee gave the vote back to me on the fourteenth of August."
"The fourteenth of August."
"Yes."
"That was two months before you walked into St. Luke's and paid my mother's deposit."
"Yes."
"You let me sit in your kitchen and make terms with you." My voice shook. "I told you I was one signature from being out of the business, and you let me say it."
"Miles."
"You poured me a drink and dressed my hand, and you knew you could fix it with a pen."
She did not look away, and that made it worse.
"I couldn't tell you before tonight," she said. "If you'd known, you'd have walked into that theater with the vote in your face. Connor reads you better than anyone alive. He would have seen it in the first minute."
"You don't get to decide that for me."
"I decided it for the plan."
"We had a rule." I took the napkin from my mouth. "Rule three. No lies between us from now on. You looked at me and agreed."
"I didn't lie to you."
"You did it by leaving it out."
Her chin came up, and her eyes went wet and bright.
"That is not the same thing."
"It is the same thing to the man bleeding in the hallway."
A door banged somewhere behind her, and she flinched.
