Chapter 15: The Pfister Suite
I knocked on the door of suite 2214 at a quarter past midnight.
Connor opened it in his shirtsleeves with a glass in his hand.
The side of his face where Natalie had slapped him was swollen and purple.
"Look who's here," he said. "The man of the hour."
"You reported the card."
"I did." He stepped back to let me in. "Come in, Miles. We should talk about it."
The suite was all cream carpet and cut flowers.
A silver ice bucket stood on the table, and on the sofa behind it lay the white dress Natalie had worn on stage.
Natalie herself sat on the end of the bed in a hotel robe, with mascara dried down her face and her knees pulled up.
She did not look at me.
"Your mother's operation is at seven," Connor said, pouring. "The deposit is a lot of money. Hazel can't help you now. She has a lot of lawyers to hire."
"Reverse the report."
"I can." He smiled. "I can do it with one call. All you have to do is sign a statement."
He slid a sheet of paper across the table.
I read the first line twice.
"This says I helped Hazel forge the trust vote."
"It says you knew about it. Which you did, I'd bet. You've been sleeping in her pocket for a week."
"I didn't know any of it."
"Nobody on that stage believed that, and a judge won't either." He clinked the ice. "Sign it, and the card clears. Your mother has her surgery. Hazel's vote gets tied up in a court for a year, and you walk away with your fifteen percent and a clean name."
"And you?"
"I keep my firm."
"You'd let a woman die to keep a firm," I said.
"I'd let anyone do anything to keep what's mine." He shrugged. "Your mother is sixty-one, Miles. She's had a good run."
I put my fist through the cream-colored wall beside his head.
