Valerius struck the door a fourth time.
The iron handle jumped under Noah's palm.
'I will not ask again,' Valerius said through the boards. 'Send the priest out, or my men will carry him.'
Noah kept his hand flat on the handle. He did not lift the bar.
The bar leaned against the wall where he had set it, and the door stood open to the corridor by a finger's width.
Behind him, Adrian got to his feet.
The signet half stayed closed in his fist. He did not cross the room. He did not reach for Noah's arm.
He stood, and he waited.
Valerius heard the silence. Noah knew he heard it, because the next words came slower.
'Bring Brother Idris,' Valerius said, to someone in the corridor. 'The church witness will stand in that chamber and swear the rite was lawful. I will not have it said the court took a priest without a churchman present.'
Boots went away down the stone.
Noah did not move his hand from the handle.
So Valerius wanted a witness. He wanted the old scribe in the room to make the killing clean.
