Chapter 13: Crosby Reads the Drafts
I read number twenty-seven three times in the dark.
Then I scrolled up and read number one.
"#1. Shower. Slip on the tile, call him crying, he'll leave the courthouse. Hospital gown. Hold his hand on camera."
January fourteenth.
The first date I'd read out loud on her rug.
Thatcher stirred beside me. "Neely?"
I handed him the phone. His face didn't change until the last screenshot.
"Pancakes," he said quietly. "She wrote down the pancakes."
The phone buzzed in his hand.
Crosby again. "Sunday dinner's at six. Come. Both of you. I want her to say it in front of Mama."
Thatcher looked at me over his glasses.
"Your call," he said.
"We're going."
At six, the iron gate on Gaston Street was standing open.
Crosby opened the front door himself. He hadn't shaved. His eyes were bloodshot.
He had Ivey's laptop under his arm.
"Thank you for coming," he said to his brother.
It was the most polite thing I'd ever heard him say to Thatcher.
Lorene was already at the head of the table. Ivey sat on her right in a pink sweater, no tripod, no phone.
