Chapter 15: The Storm
I crossed the aisle before the chair finished adjourning.
"Two days," my aunt said. "Can you do it in two days?"
"Not the whole roof."
"Then do the part over my bed."
Thatcher was already behind me with his phone out, reading the wind numbers.
"Sixty miles an hour sustained," he said. "Gusts to eighty. Those tarps won't hold."
"Nothing on Bolton Street will hold," Tammy said.
"Then we start with hers," I said. "Tomorrow at six."
Wednesday at six in the morning, we tore the back half off my aunt's roof.
The decking underneath was soft as cake. I put my boot through it twice.
Thatcher cut new plywood on two sawhorses in her side yard. Tammy and I laid it.
Every nail that went in was ring-shank.
Nail by nail, straight and true, the steady rhythm of the gun filled the yard.
My aunt brought out sweet tea every hour on a tray, whether we wanted it or not.
"You're doing that crooked," she told Thatcher from the yard.
"Yes, ma'am."
"You're not doing it crooked. I just want you to know I'm watching."
