Chapter 7: My Name on Their Bid
Ashwood Homes had the top two floors of an old cotton warehouse on Bay Street.
I went the next morning at nine, in my crew shirt and my boots, with the printout of the bidder list in my hand.
The lobby was glass and reclaimed pine. A model of Riverside Bend sat in a case by the elevators, every tiny roof perfect.
The receptionist knew my face. Everybody in Savannah knew my face now.
"Mrs. Ashwood is in a meeting," she said.
"Then I'll wait. I'm good at it."
I didn't have to wait long.
The elevator opened and Lorene stepped out with four people in suits behind her. She was showing them the model.
She saw me and didn't break stride.
"Neely. How nice. Have you come to say thank you?"
"For what?"
"We put your little company on the biggest bid in the city." She smiled at the suits. "Faircloth did excellent storm work for us last year."
"You didn't ask me."
"I didn't think I needed to. You've been our sub for three years."
"You fired me by text on my wedding day."
One of the suits looked at the floor.
Two salespeople at the front desk had stopped pretending to type.
Lorene tapped her gold pen against the bidder list in my hand.
"Let's be adults," she said. "Every contract I cancelled, you get back. Today. The seven houses, plus the rebuild, plus whatever's next."
"In exchange for what?"
"Annul it." She said it lightly, like she was asking me to move my truck. "That counter farce. Annul it, come back to work, and we'll all forget the rug launch."
"And Thatcher?"
"Thatcher will be fine. He's always fine. He's very good at walking away from things."
The suits were all looking at me now.
