Chapter 13: Pancakes in Bellingham

Paige had picked a pancake house in Bellingham, twenty minutes south of the border, at ten in the morning on a weekday.

Theo drove me.

He parked at the far end of the lot, facing the door, and turned off the engine.

"I'll be here," he said.

"You don't have to watch."

"I know. I'm going to anyway."

I went in alone.

She was in the last booth, in a grey hoodie with the hood down and her blonde hair loose, which I had never seen.

A single crutch leaned against the seat beside her.

"Thank you for coming," Paige said. "I wasn't sure you would."

"What happened to your hip?"

"Stress fracture in the joint. I landed on it when he dropped me in Salt Lake." She tried to smile. "The doctor says eight weeks. The federation says injured, and for once the federation is right."

"Wyatt told me you quit."

"I know. He told his father that too." She put both hands around her cup. "I never quit, Lena. After the stream he said I'd cost us the Games, and then he asked me to tell everyone it was my choice. I said no, so he benched me."

The waitress came, and Paige ordered toast she did not eat.

When she left, Paige leaned across the table.

"He told me you knew about the alternate part," she said. "He told me you'd be at the boards on Saturday, counting for both of us. That's the only reason I said yes."
