Chapter 10: The Rain

On the first Friday of the month, it rained so hard that the wipers couldn't keep up.

Dillon had promised a lender on my lawn in eight weeks, and strangers with cameras on my street before that.

So tonight we were not going to be seen.

Rafe drove my car. His own was in storage somewhere, and he said he didn't trust a rental in weather like this.

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"Beaver County. Tonight is the first Friday, and Dillon always has a showing there. A place called the Lakeview Motor Lodge."

"There's no lake?"

"There's a retention pond with a duck."

He glanced sideways at me, and I almost laughed.

"For two years," I said, "Dillon had a late showing in Beaver County on the first Friday of every month. He put it in the calendar we shared. I thought it was a house he couldn't sell."

"And Lydia?"

"First Friday, she said she had a client dinner."

Rafe was quiet for a mile.

"First Friday," he said. "I filmed in Sicily on the first Friday of last April. I called her at midnight her time. She picked up on the second ring and said she was in bed."

"Was she?"

"She sounded like she was in bed. She had a voice for it."

I looked out at the rain.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry. You didn't marry her."

"No," I said. "I just introduced her to every person I ever loved."

He took one hand off the wheel and set it on the seat between us, palm up.

I didn't take it.

The Lakeview Motor Lodge was a single row of doors under a green roof, lit by a sign missing its first two letters.

We parked in the dark at the edge of a gas station lot across the road, where we could see the whole row.
