Chapter 12: Rule Two
Rafe's POV
Casey took the card out of Eli's fingers and read it twice.
"Dillon said eight weeks," she said. "He said the lender doesn't ask nicely."
"I called the number from the truck," Eli said. "A woman answered with the company name and nothing else. When I asked who owed them, she said they only speak to the property owner."
"That's me."
"That's you. Seven weeks and some days, if he told the truth."
She set the card face up in the middle of the table, under the light, where none of us could forget it.
"Then we deal with it tomorrow," she said. "Tonight I'm not doing math."
Eli looked at her, and then he took one look at my face, closed the pizza box, and stood up.
"I'm going to eat this in my truck," he said.
"You don't have to," Casey said.
"I really do. Rafe, if I come back in an hour, I'm bringing the wrench."
"Understood."
The door shut behind him. His truck started in the rain and pulled away.
The kitchen was very quiet.
Casey stood by the table with her wet jacket hanging off one shoulder.
She had told me in a gas station lot, in plain words, exactly what she wanted. I had thought of nothing else the whole drive home.
I had never in my life been so afraid of a bedroom.
"Rafe," she said.
"Yes."
"The lights are on in the hall. You can walk up stairs, can't you?"
"I'm going to need you to go first."
"Why?"
"So I don't run."
She smiled, small and sharp, and took my hand.
I followed her up the stairs, past the framed photograph of her grandmother, and into a bedroom that smelled like lavender and clean sheets.
She switched on the lamp by the bed.
Then she turned around and pushed my jacket off my shoulders.
It fell on the floor.
"Rule two," she said.
"Casey."
"Nobody touches anybody unless Lydia is watching."
"I remember."
"Is she watching?"
"No."
"Then you broke it, in the car. You put your hand on my thigh the whole way home."
"So did you."
"Mine was a taunt," she said. "Yours was a violation."
I laughed, and the laugh cracked, and she took my face in both her hands and kissed me.
It was not like the car. It was slow and certain, and she took her time.
Her mouth opened under mine. I felt her tongue, and then her teeth against my lip, and my knees went soft.
