Chapter 20: Road Crew

I let Dillon into my grandmother's kitchen, because Eli was already standing behind him with the wrench.

"Sit," Eli said. "Hands where I can see them."

"I'm not armed."

"I'm not asking about weapons. I'm asking about manners."

Dillon sat at the end of the table, as far from Rafe as the room allowed.

Rafe stayed by the stove with his arms crossed. He had not said a word since the porch.

I put my phone on the table between us, face up.

"You have five minutes," I said. "Then I decide whether to call the police on a man who sat on my porch at night."

"You already know I didn't send her threats."

"I know you didn't. What's on the phone?"

He unlocked it with a shaking thumb and slid it across.

It was a two-person thread, and the name at the top was Road Crew.

"Lydia made it two years ago," Dillon said. "Just her and me."

"The Rafe fan chat."

"It was never about Rafe."

I scrolled.

Lydia: He's in Lisbon till the 9th. Dinner at the lodge?

Lydia: Case is going to love you in a tux. Don't let her pick the flowers.

Lydia: Tell your mom the paperwork is nothing. She just signs where it says. Say it's a guarantee for the wedding.

I looked up.

"She told me what to tell my mother," Dillon said. "I didn't think it up."

"And me?"

"I wanted to ask you for a loan. She said you'd say yes to a ring faster than you'd say yes to money."
