Chapter 4: Row Three

Dillon was in the Denver hotel lobby on Saturday morning wearing a fan lanyard.

I saw him before he saw me.

He stood by the registration table for Rafe Tolland's meetup, laughing at something with a woman handing out tote bags.

Lydia stood next to him in the green dress.

They both wore badges. Hers said GUEST. His said GUEST. They were matching.

"Casey," Eli said behind me. "I see him."

"Don't."

"I'm not doing anything. I'm holding a coffee."

"You're holding it like a hammer."

Eli loosened his grip. He had bought a plane ticket the night I said Denver, and he had said only, "I'll sit in the back and look scary."

I walked across the lobby.

Lydia saw me first. Her face went wide with surprise, and then wider.

"Case! Oh my God, you made it!" She jogged over and hugged me. "I wanted to tell you. Dillon showed up last night. He said he couldn't stay home and think about it."

"Did he," I said.

"He just wants to apologize. Let him."

Dillon came up behind her and lifted both hands.

"I'm not here to fight," he said. "I bought a ticket to the show. I'm allowed to like a vlogger."

"You're allowed," I said. "Anywhere else."

"The hotel has no rule against me."

"The flight had two names on it, Dillon. Neither of them was mine."

His smile twitched. Lydia's hand tightened on my sleeve.

"Case, you're upset," she said. "Don't do this here. Not in front of all his fans."

All around us people were pinning on badges and trading stickers.
