Chapter 13: What the Will Says
I sat.
Grandma Ardis pushed a plate of eggs across the table and watched me until I picked up a fork.
"Nolan's coming," she said. "I asked him last night. He's refused to hear this twice, so he can hear it with a witness."
He came in through the back door a minute later in a clean flannel, with his hair still wet.
He took the chair by the stove.
He looked at the floor, and I looked at my eggs.
Grandma opened the manila envelope and took out three stapled pages.
"I rewrote this in March, the week they let me out of the hospital," she said. "I read it to my lawyer over the phone, and I signed it in front of two nurses."
She put on her reading glasses.
"I leave the house at Indian Lake and the land under it to my granddaughter, Keeley Engberg, in her own name only. It is never to be held jointly with any husband."
I put the fork down.
"I leave the dock, the boat yard lot and the strip of shore beside it to Nolan Hatch, who has been told he will take it and says he won't."
"I won't," Nolan said.
"You will, when I'm dead and can't hear you." She turned a page. "And I leave a place at this table to Alana, for as long as she wants it. That one isn't legal, but I wrote it anyway."
Nobody laughed.
"My lawyer mailed Keeley a copy in March," Grandma said. "Certified. A green card came back to him a week later."
She slid it across the table.
The line marked Received by held a signature in the neat slanting hand that signed our Christmas cards and our tax returns.
