Chapter 10: The Study
I sat.
Aurelio poured me coffee with a hand that shook slightly.
Massimo came in from the hall and stood behind my chair with his arms folded.
He was dressed already, in the charcoal suit, and his face was closed.
"Tell her," Aurelio said.
"After the ball," Massimo said.
"After the ball is tomorrow, and tomorrow you'll have her in a dress in front of three hundred people who'll know more than she does."
The old man set down the pot.
"Salvatore's daughter walks into a room with the whole family behind her, she should know why."
Massimo was quiet for a moment.
Then he said, "Come upstairs, Marisa."
The study was on the second floor, at the end of the hall.
I had not been inside it in four years.
The door was dark oak with a brass handle.
When Massimo opened it I stopped on the threshold and couldn't make my feet go on.
It was exactly as I remembered.
The wall of books and the green-shaded lamp, the long window onto the garden, the Persian rug worn thin where my father had paced.
