Chapter 7: The Window
On Wednesday night he took me upstairs to a room I hadn't known the house had.
It was on the fifth floor, under the roof, a long glass room with a leather sofa and a bar and nothing else.
The whole lake wall was glass, floor to ceiling.
Beyond it Lake Michigan lay black and enormous, with the lights of Navy Pier far to the south.
Snow was falling on the other side, slow and thick.
"Your father built this the year you were born," Massimo said.
"He used to sit here and smoke, and look at the water."
"I never came up here."
"He didn't allow it. He said it was the only room in the house where he could stop being the boss."
I walked to the glass.
It was freezing near it, and the snow made the lights swim.
I could see myself in it, a pale shape in a silk robe the housekeeper had left on my bed.
I could see him behind me, tall and dark, with a reflection that looked back at me.
He had taken off his jacket and rolled his sleeves to the elbow.
"Come here," he said.
"I'm here."
"Closer to the glass."
I stepped up until my toes almost touched it.
He came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders.
