Chapter 22: The Hill
"Think about it," I said.
I said it lightly.
Rory nodded once.
His brother looked from him to me and back, and quietly took his coat off the chair.
"I'll be at the motel on 9G till Monday," he said.
Rory walked him out.
I stood in the empty kitchen, and the tea went cold in my hands.
On Monday morning I had a more pressing problem than a ring I hadn't seen again.
The county board of supervisors had put one item on its agenda, and the item was my hill.
The notice was three lines long.
"Proposed taking of three hundred acres on Orchard Road for a bypass and mixed-use development, pending resolution of title dispute."
The title dispute had been dismissed from court on Thursday.
Nobody on the board seemed to have noticed.
"They're not stupid," the lawyer said, when I called her. "They know the case is over. They want to vote before the paper catches up."
"Who benefits?"
"A developer who golfs with the chairman."
"Can they actually take it?"
"If the vote goes their way and the owner doesn't fight, they can start," she said.
