Chapter 5: The Safe

He kissed me before I finished the word.

It was not careful.

His hand slid into my hair and the other caught my back and pulled me against him, and the whole length of his body was hard and warm and shaking.

I kissed him back.

I heard it all, the wet small sound of his mouth, my own breath catching, his low groan when I bit his lip.

I had not known a kiss had a sound.

He lifted me onto the bench, and papers slid off, and neither of us looked.

My knees opened around his hips, and his mouth went to my throat, and I tipped my head back and said his name to the ceiling.

"Say it again," he muttered against my skin.

"Peter."

"Again."

"Peter, please."

His hands found the hem of my dress and stopped there, shaking.

My phone buzzed against the bench.

We both froze.

It buzzed again, long, and I turned the screen with one hand.

Home soon? Tobias had written. Geneva has a headache. We're leaving early.

Peter read it over my shoulder.

His jaw went tight.

"He's coming home," I said.

"I know."

"If I'm not there he'll start asking questions."

"I know." He pressed his forehead to mine and breathed. "Go. I mean it. I'm not letting him see you walk in with my mouth on your neck."

I laughed, shakily, and he laughed too, and it was a lovely sound.

He walked me down the stairs and out to the curb and put me in a cab and shut the door.
