Chapter 14: The Table

Joss's POV

I carried my own chair into the Hetherington Freight boardroom.

I had borrowed it from the church basement.

It was a gray metal folding chair with ST. ANTHONY'S stenciled on the back.

Nine directors sat around a mahogany table the length of a canoe.

Rosalyn sat at the head, in a wheelchair with a nurse standing behind it, in a navy dress and a fresh strand of pearls.

She looked at the folding chair and then at me.

"Josephine," she said, "this is a private meeting."

"It's a special meeting called by the CEO, Mrs. Hetherington. I'm a witness."

I unfolded the chair next to Bennett's and sat down.

Across the table, Preston smiled at me with every tooth.

He had a leather folder in front of him, a good tan, and the air of a man who has rehearsed a eulogy.

"Thank you all for coming at such short notice," he said. "As your chief financial officer, I'd like to open with the facts."

He stood.

He spoke for a long time.

He used the words unprecedented and unfortunate and responsibility, and he never raised his voice.
