Chapter 15: The Roof
He found me on the roof of the parking garage at six.
I had gone there because it was the only place in the building with no one in it.
The sun was going down over the river.
The Flats lay below us, brick and rail and a freighter nosing under the bridge.
I had a sandwich from the vending machine and a can of ginger ale, and I'd eaten about half.
Bennett stopped at the stairwell door.
"May I?" he said.
"It's your roof."
"I'd still like to be asked."
I moved my bag off the concrete bench.
He sat at the other end, two feet away, with his elbows on his knees.
For a while we watched the freighter.
"Preston's at his lawyer's," Bennett said. "The county prosecutor has the log. My mother went home with her nurse and hasn't called."
"She will."
"Yes." He looked at his hands. "She'll call and say I've broken her heart, and the worst part is she believes it."
"Bennett."
"Yes," he said.
"I have something to say, and I need you to hear all of it without answering."
"All right."
I put the sandwich down.
