Chapter 22: Under Oath
Patrick's POV
My lawyer told me three times not to testify.
"The prosecutor cannot compel you," he said in the corridor outside the courtroom. "Marilyn Alden's statement is a plea-bargain, not evidence. Let me argue it."
"If I stay silent, her lawyer says I hid something."
"If you speak, he gets to cross-examine you under oath about every day of the last two years."
"Then he can ask," I said, and went in.
The courtroom was full.
Reporters filled the back rows, and behind them sat the parents who had watched the launch and come to see how it ended.
Cora sat in the second row, in a dark green dress, with Bea on one side and an empty seat on the other.
She had left the baby with a nurse.
She did not look at me, and she did not have to.
The judge was a gray-haired woman who read every page put in front of her.
"Mr. Ansley has asked to be heard," she said. "I will allow it, and I will remind him he is under oath."
I took the stand.
Marilyn sat at the defense table in her gray cardigan with her hands folded.
She smiled at me, thinly.
Her lawyer stood.
"Mr. Ansley, you secretly purchased four percent of Alden Technologies."
"Yes."
"Through three shell companies, to hide your name."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted Littlebird, and the man running the company would not sell it to me."
I kept my hands on the rail.
"A seat at the table was the only way to read the books."
"You wanted to take it from her."
"I wanted to buy it. I did not know yet that she owned it."
