Chapter 29: Miles's POV

Miles's POV

I got to the third row before I knew I had moved.

Hazel stood in the aisle with her back straight, facing a woman in a gray silk jacket who held a phone up in her hand.

"The board will be interested," the woman said again, "to learn that a student of this conservatory plays private recordings of other people to a paying audience."

"The voice on that recording is mine," I said.

Every head in the row turned.

The woman looked up at me. She had Whitney's chin and Whitney's careful, pleasant eyes.

"I beg your pardon?"

"The voice from the kitchen. The one you just taped a second time." I kept my hands at my sides. "It's me, at twenty. I'm the only person in that file who could object to it, and I don't. I signed a release on Tuesday. The curator has it."

"The recording was made in someone's private home," the woman said. "Without the speaker's knowledge."

"Yes. Made by your niece."

I heard Whitney breathe in.

She hadn't looked at me once. She was staring at the phone in her aunt's hand, and her face had gone completely still.

"Auntie," she said quietly.

"Not now, darling."

"You said you were coming to see the exhibit."

"I am seeing it."

"You said you wanted to meet her. You said you'd tell her it was kind of her to include me." Whitney's voice was getting thinner. "You said you'd read my letter and it moved you."

"Whitney."

"You asked me for the date of the recording. And the name of her program director. I told you because I thought you were helping me apologize."

The room had stopped pretending not to listen.

I looked at Hazel, and she was looking at Whitney with her head tilted slightly, listening.
