Chapter 14: Sabrina's Mistake

By nine the next morning the waiting room at St. Michael's was full of the two families.

My father's captains sat along the left wall in their good black coats.

The Santoro drivers sat along the right.

Nobody had arranged it that way.

Rocco's mother sat in the middle with her rosary, and Rocco stood beside her with both forearms wrapped to the elbow in white gauze.

Pasquale had a tube in his nose and a nurse's order to sleep, and he was telling everyone he was fine.

I had been up all night and I wore the same dress.

Sabrina came in at ten past nine.

She wore a pale pink coat, and she carried white lilies, and her eyes were already wet.

"Oh, thank God," she said, and she went straight to Rocco and put her hand on his bandaged arm. "I heard on the radio. I came as fast as I could."

He looked at her hand.

He didn't move his arm.

"You came from where?" he said.

"From home. I was home all night, Rocco, I only heard at six." She turned to the room, and her voice shook just enough. "I'm so sorry. I know what people are saying. I know everyone thinks the Santoros did this, but I don't believe it. I think someone wanted to make Gemma's first month look like a disaster."

That was how she said it.

She looked at me, grieved and gentle.

"Gemma, you know I'd never wish this on you. I'd swear it on my father's grave. I haven't spoken to anyone about the port. I wouldn't know who to ask."

The captains on the left wall had gone very still.

Rocco's mother put her rosary in her lap.

"You haven't spoken to anyone," Rocco said.
