Chapter 8: Four Posts
On the first Tuesday of January, Cathal left the house at eight and came back at noon without a word.
He stood in the front hall for a long time with snow melting on his shoulders and one hand on the banister.
I did not ask where he had been.
By midnight I was done waiting for him to talk.
I took him by the wrist and led him up the stairs to the room with the iron bed.
"Tie me up," I said.
He stared at me.
"I'm serious," I said.
"I've been the one in charge since Christmas Eve, every minute, every word."
"I'm tired, Dwyer. I want you to take it from me for an hour."
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he took off the blue tie he had worn all day, and held it between his hands, and looked at me.
"You say stop, and I stop," he said.
"Don't," I said.
I sat on the edge of the bed and held out both wrists.
He wound the silk twice around them and knotted it, not tight.
Then he lifted my arms over my head and fastened the tie's loose end to the iron bedpost.
I lay back, and the mattress dipped under his weight as he knelt over me.
"Look at you," he said.
His voice was low and slow and different, and every hair on my arms stood up.
He pulled my sweater up over my breasts and off my shoulders, as far as the tie would let it go.
He left it bunched at my wrists.
My bra went next, with the clasp opened by one hand.
He sat back on his heels and looked at me, bare to the waist with my arms stretched over my head.
"I've got something for you," he said.
He went to his coat on the chair and came back with a long purple feather.
It was the feather from his Mummers plume, and the quill end was bent.
"You kept it," I said, and laughed.
