Chapter 17: His Tie

Jud came home at noon with a paper cup of coffee gone cold in his hand.

Yancey was waiting in the kitchen.

He'd been waiting for six hours, in one of Jud's shirts, and had not been able to eat the toast he'd made.

He looked at Jud's jaw, where a new bruise had come up purple beside the old one.

"Dewey," he said.

"Dewey."

"I told him not to."

"He didn't need telling." Jud set the cup on the counter. "I went to the bridge. And then the shop. And then I went to see your mother."

Yancey's throat closed.

"I took her coffee," Jud said. "I didn't know what else to take. I knelt there for a while, and I told her I was sorry, and then I told her about the bread."

"What bread?"

"Dewey says she kept a loaf for me. At the end. She said, tell Jud I've got the bread."

Yancey made a sound.

He crossed the kitchen in three steps and pushed his face into Jud's chest.

Jud's arms came around him.

They stood there for a long time, wrapped together by the sink, and neither of them said anything.

"I want to turn myself in," Jud said at last, into his hair.

"What?" Yancey said.

"The DA. Today. I'll say I was driving. I'll take what the law has for it. It's nine years late, but."

"No," Yancey said.

"Yancey."

"No." Yancey pulled back. "Not like that. Not quietly in some office where your father can send a lawyer and a check."

"Then how?"
