Chapter 18: Sunrise

"I love you," Yancey said.

He said it to the water, with the sun a thin red line on the far edge of the bay.

He felt Jud go still beside him on the pier.

"Say it again," Jud said.

"I love you."

"Look at me when you do."

Yancey turned.

Jud sat with his bare feet over the edge and a blanket around his shoulders.

The light caught the grey in his eyes.

They were very bright.

"I love you, Jud," Yancey said. "I've loved you since I was nineteen. I just didn't have a place to put it."

"I love you."

"I know. You said it first, with my handprint on your face."

"I'll say it against anything." Jud's voice shook. "I'll say it at a board meeting. I'll say it in a church."

"Please don't say it in a church."

Jud laughed.

He cupped Yancey's face in both hands and kissed him, and it tasted of salt, and went on until the gulls started up.

When they broke apart, his thumbs were still on Yancey's cheekbones.

"Come inside," he said. "Come to bed."

"Not the bed."

"No?"

"The porch." Yancey nodded toward the house. "The daybed. Where the sun comes in."

Jud's pupils widened.

"Whatever you want."

The screened porch ran along the back of the house, with a wide white daybed against the wall under a ceiling fan.
