Chapter 16: Moon Night
"Then he's never let a human into his study," I said.
The woman looked at me a long moment.
"No," she said. "He never has."
She wrote a phone number on a napkin and pushed it across the counter.
"The night before the full moon, the whole pack runs the north valley. Every wolf, all night. He goes up to the stone to watch."
"His house will be empty."
"His house will be empty," she said. "And I'll be the one who stays behind to watch the pups."
She unlocked the front door herself and went out into the dark.
Ross rubbed his jaw.
"You're going to break into a werewolf's house," he said.
"On November fourth."
"And I'm going to drive you."
"You can't come into the valley. They'll kill you."
"Then I'll drive you to the edge of it." He picked up his hat. "And I'll wait there."
I looked at him.
"That's a joke," he said. "Mostly."
It didn't get to be November fourth.
It was November first, at a quarter to midnight.
I was refilling ketchups at the Northside when the number of Ross's cracked spare phone lit up on my screen.
