Chapter 21: The Moon Stone

"How far?" I said.

"Forty-two miles to the cattle guard," the Beta said. "Then the valley road."

Ross was already standing up out of the chair.

"My truck," he said. "Keys are in it."

"You're not coming. You can't even see."

"I can see fine out of one." He picked up his pocketknife and closed it. "And they said no human in the valley. They didn't say how many."

Nash looked at him.

Then he turned and went out the door.

By the time I got outside there was only a black wolf going down the hill, with a white one behind him.

I drove.

Ross sat beside me with his swollen hand on the dash and his hat back on his head.

I took the cattle guard at fifty.

The valley road was lined with parked trucks.

Up above the lodge, on the slope, there was a flat gray rock the size of a living room floor.

I had seen it in a photograph. A young woman in a white dress, laughing.

Now there were two hundred people standing in a ring around it, and not one of them was laughing.
