Chapter 15: I'm the Victim
Cal heard the cane before he saw her.
It ticked down the aisle of Courtroom Four, steady and unhurried, and every head in the gallery turned.
The parole officer was halfway through his sentence.
"...and the photographs show sustained, intimate contact between the parolee and the victim of his offense, in clear breach of condition seven."
The judge, a gray woman with reading glasses on a chain, looked up over the bench.
"Can I help you, ma'am?"
"Yes, Your Honor." Kira stopped at the rail. "I'm the woman in the fourth photograph."
The room went quiet.
At the prosecution table the lawyer from Haverford & Pell stopped smiling.
"Your Honor, this person has no standing," he said. "The victim's identity is protected by agreement."
"Then he has just told you who she is, counsel," the judge said dryly. "Go on, ma'am."
Kira did not look at Cal.
"My name is Kira Tennant. Three years and eight months ago I was hit by a silver car on Larch Street. The state says the driver was Calvin Bracken."
"Ms. Tennant," the lawyer said sharply, "you are bound by a confidentiality agreement."
"I am."
"Then you will sit down."
"No."
She said it so evenly that the lawyer actually took a step back.
"I'm the victim, Your Honor. I'm the one the order protects. Nobody asked me whether I wanted it, and I'm telling you now that I don't."
The judge took her glasses off.
"Do you wish to be sworn?"
"Yes."
The bailiff held out the Bible and Kira put her hand on it.
Cal gripped the edge of the table until his fingers hurt.
"Mr. Bracken did not seek me out," she said. "I met him at County General, where I work. He thought I was a financial advocate and nothing else, and I let him think it."
