Chapter 18: What He Forgives
Kira Tennant was brushing her teeth when the old boss called, and she was in her car before she had spat.
By the time she reached the garage the police cars had come and gone.
A young officer was still in the yard, writing on a pad, and he said they had found Preston Ridgway asleep in his father's driveway with the engine ticking.
They had breathalyzed him at the door with a lawyer standing beside him.
He had blown over the limit, and he would be charged on Monday.
"Monday," Kira said.
"That's what the sergeant said, ma'am. Mr. Ridgway's counsel asked for a day to arrange a surrender."
"And he got it."
"He got it," the officer said, and did not meet her eyes.
She climbed the outside stairs one at a time.
The door of the room above the office was open.
Cal was sitting on the cot in his undershirt with a bag of frozen peas held against his cheekbone.
His lip was split and swollen, and there was a long red mark across one shoulder.
"I told them to pull the camera," he said. "They've got the file. They have him on film saying Lena told him to keep going."
"I know. The old boss told me."
"I didn't hit him. He wanted me to."
"Good."
She crossed the room and took the peas out of his hand.
Her fingers were shaking.
"Sit still," she said.
She washed the cut at the sink with a cloth and cold water, and he held still the whole time, looking up at her.
She had expected shouting.
She had spent the afternoon expecting it.
"Cal."
"Let me say it."
"Please don't tell me you forgive me tonight just because I stood up."
"I'm not." His eyes were steady. "I want to tell you exactly what I do and what I don't."
