Chapter 4: My Mother's Guard

I had texted Simon the address from the taxi, and he arrived on Alder Street at seven that evening, with two men in grey jackets behind him.

I stood on the porch of my mother's house and held out her letter.

He read it under the porch light.

When he reached the last line he stopped, and for a moment he did not seem able to look up.

"She wrote this the week before she died," I said.

"Yes."

"You said you knew each other. You didn't say how."

"Come inside," he said. "It's cold."

I let him into the study.

He did not sit in my mother's chair, and I noticed.

He took the one by the window instead.

"Eleven years ago my firm was three people and a rented desk," he said. "Every bank in the city said no. Your mother wrote me a check for two hundred thousand dollars. She didn't ask for a percentage, and she didn't tell your father."

"Why would she do that?"

"She said she liked how I answered a hard question."

"What did you say?"

"That I didn't know." He almost smiled. "I paid her back in three years. She never cashed it. She told me to keep it, and that someday she'd ask for something else."

"The something else was me."

"Yes."

"She wanted you to look after me."

"She wanted me to make sure nobody sold you," he said. "Her words."

I sat on the edge of the desk.

My throat was tight, and I did not want him to see it.
